The concept of ‘choice’
for a disabled young person is an extremely complex one. Each young person
is entirely different, they each have their own set of demands, needs
and desires which, coupled with a certain level of mental and physical
dexterity, directly affects their ability not only to make choices but
to communicate their choice to others.
‘1000 words’ attempts to address the complexity of the issue
of choice by presenting the viewer with an equally complex journey. Each
10-second clip reveals a snippet of a conversation, a touch, a scream,
a stroke. The viewer is allowed to glimpse fragments of interaction and
through these moments are able to build up an understanding of what the
young people are trying to express.
